He opened Zazen Gallery in July 1997.Richard has been a lecturer at the University of Wisconsin, Madison Art Department Woodworking program for 1999-2000 and fall 2003 programs.
Richard is always working on new designs of custom furniture in beautiful
woods letting the wood speak for itself. My Furniture designs represent a
continuous exploration in woodworking techniques. Beginning
with a foundation in traditional joinery, this has led to a current series
of pieces incorporating bending wood.
Most of my work combines solid wood with veneer. In some cases, solid wood is the best design choice as it can be joined, carved and textured. This allows for an organic element. Typically the carved wood is black lacquered poplar making for a strong contrast to the naturally finished wood. I carefully select the most figured wood. Veneer allows for the highest quality possible. This wood becomes the flat planes of the objects where we can enjoy and contemplate the natural beauty. Each design sets the stage for best viewing. The support is structural, yet quiet.
Bending wood allows for dramatic sculptural imagery. These pieces use vacuum press veneering for the outer faces. The final glue is achieved by physically bending layers of ply around the form. Flexible bending plywood is softer, lighter and a renewable resource. The outer faces of highly figured wood are veneer thickness, which is also the most efficient use of the tree. This exiting direction has resulted in sketches of curves and arcs to be realized.
All of my work is done by myself or with the help of one full time assistant. All of designs are my original work. A design is successful for me when it performs its function as well as viewed as sculpture.
